ChatGPT will be charging for access soon, but that’s not the interesting part…

There is nothing surprising about the above headline…

It’s estimated that running costs about $3 million per month. That cost will climb as demand continues to scale. With the recent announcement of Microsoft’s follow-on $10 billion investment to acquire a 49% stake in OpenAI, the team will increasingly have to demonstrate the commercial viability. With the sheer cost of running and operating the model and infrastructure, and the oversubscription (we’ve all seen the charts), it was just a question of when now whether charging for access would happen.

The team offers a waitlist sign-up for “ChatGPT Professional,” the paid version of ChatGPT. However, the more interesting story is the structure of the form and how the team is testing price sensitivity.
